Building My First PC

Jake’s Story

One of the first tasks I was given was to build a PC and I felt a little daunted to say the least. However it was an interesting task because building a computer from scratch gives you the perfect machine for your needs or a clients needs! It takes the mystery out of what’s going on inside that black box which you spend all your time on. The main benefits of building your own PC is you can customize your system, upgrading your PC in the future becomes easier and cheaper since your parts aren’t tied to a particular manufacturer.

As I started the task I found building a PC was relatively straight forward,  first I had to make sure I had everything I needed in order to carry out the job, tools and components which include: central processing unit, Motherboard to chassis or case which is underlined by four mounts which then have to be screwed into to secure the board.

Once the board is secured I then began to install the various components, starting with the CPU and heat sync, which is the focal point to any PC. The heat sync allows the CPU to stay cool and run at its optimum temperature.

The next component that I installed was RAM (Random Access Memory) which is quick and easy as it simply slots into the ports allocated on the motherboard, then I ensured everything was secured with the clips provided.

Very similar to RAM is the NIC(Network Interface Card) as again it just slots in to the allocated port. The final component to be installed before the power supply unit is the HDD (Hard disk drive) Which is attached to the on board chassis first and then connected to the motherboard using a SATA cable.

Once all components have been put in place the power supply unit can be placed and attached where necessary in order to power the primary components. Once completed the case can be closed and the PC can be powered on.

Overall I found building my first PC very useful and satisfying. The exercise allowed me to understand more accurately how PC’s actually work and has helped a great deal with my training at Bury College!
