A Day in the life of a… IT Apprentice!!
Alex’s Story
I was very certain that being an apprentice was the right choice for me. Particularly because by working as an apprentice within a company you get lots of real-life experience which I could apply to my work as I learned.
Being an apprentice at Smarter Technologies really appealed to me from the start because I have always had a keen interest in IT and during the interview process I quickly became aware of the extensive knowledge Smarter Technologies have and how much everyone made me feel part of the team even just at the interview.
The night before my first day the nerves began to kick in to say the least. However when I arrived I soon calmed down as I was greeted with a friendly smile from Bev the office manager. I was given my own desk and introduced to all the team, John pulled up a chair and started taking me through what my job as an apprentice would entail. I was very excited to get started.
My first job after my initial training was a computer installation for a regular client of Smarter Technologies. The client needed a range of software for business needs but wasn’t sure on the most appropriate options. It was up to me to guide the client through the best course of action and discuss what I believed would be most efficient. I felt supported by my colleagues and was able to confidently install the software and then secure it as well as introducing the client to additional services I felt would be of value. It was a great sense of achievement!
Now I’m almost 12 months into my apprenticeship and I have learned so much about IT. I believe the knowledge I have gained is thanks to working with Smarter Technologies and the work within my course at Bury College. My colleagues who I work closely with have also played a huge role in developing my knowledge. I look forward to completing my course and hopefully continuing to work at Smarter Technologies as I am very much enjoying myself here.
