My First Job as an IT Apprentice! Alex’s Story

Alex’s Story

Once my initial training had finished, although nervous, I was keen to get stuck in to the real life world of IT, luckily for me my first job as an IT apprentice definitely provided me with that and was certainly a job I wouldn’t forget.

The job was for YMCA Black Country Group (YMCABC) an excellent charity dedicated to helping people in need with housing, finding work , childcare and overcoming addictions.

Since YMCABC is based in West Bromwich, Wolverhampton and Walsall I, along with two other colleagues, spent two weeks in accommodation provided by work. Our goal was to migrate YMCABC’s computer systems to a unified system that was well organised. This meant that all computers and laptops would need to be migrated to Windows 8.1 along with additional software packages such as AVG ISBE and Office 2013.

Prior to heading down to the Black Country it was my job to create a customized Windows 8.1 installation that could be used as a baseline and help save us time. Once I had created the image I needed to deploy it, However we came across a problem YMCABCA did not have the necessary network capabilities to deploy it from a central networked location and not only this but YMCABC had many distributed sites.

After discussing the problem with John I came up with a method so that each staff member would carry external hard drives with the customized image stored on it. This allowed for secure and controlled access to all the IT assets of the group. The job was a success and YMCABC were extremely pleased with the end result.

I left the Black Country feeling accomplished and proud my first Job as an IT Apprentice was complete. And I was even more excited and prepared for what was to come next during my apprenticeship as well as continuing my training with Bury College.
